潮剧《典妻》由中国著名编剧罗怀臻根据宁波籍作家柔石先生的小说《为奴隶的母亲》改编创作。
民国年间，南方农村的一户贫苦人家。丈夫谋生计屡屡受挫，并染上赌博酗酒，幼子春宝又久病不愈，穷困逼迫之下，丈夫以一百块大洋将妻子出典3年。妻子泪别病儿和丈夫委委曲曲地走出旧家，迈入新家门槛。
新家的主人是个年长的秀才。因为秀才娘子多年不育，又不允许丈夫纳妾，所以典妻借腹，传宗接代。新家是富裕的，秀才对妻也似乎不坏，可妻还是惦记着旧家，惦记着儿子。
一年后，随着妻和秀才生的儿子秋宝的降临，妻也似乎渐渐融进了新家。秀才甚至信誓旦旦地许诺妻，要在3年期满后正式纳她为妾。
秋宝的百日庆典，亲夫突然来了，这下又唤醒了妻对春宝和旧家的怀念。尤其是秀才夫妇竟当面诬陷妻的亲夫偷窃，并且也无情地辱骂和羞辱妻的时候，妻终于明白了自己的实际地位，她对秀才的一丝幻想也随之破灭了。期满回家的日子，妻竟不能和秋宝再见一面，妻的心又将要不由自主地留在这个伤心而又屈辱的“家”。
妻的归家之路是这样的漫长，一颗母亲的心被掰成了两半，她只能再次幻想着，幻想着亲夫能够改掉恶习，重新振作；幻想着春宝的病能够治好，健康活着；幻想着一家三口的亲情团聚……可是，当妻终于跨进自家门槛的时候，她的儿子春宝已经病得奄奄一息……
